What does the Bible say?

by Anita Clark

Lesson 18 - The Holy Spirit is seen in other ways in the Bible.

1. Dove: The dove is a symbol of Peace, also a dove is far seeing).

Matthew 3:16 - “And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:”

2. Fire: The children of Israel were led by a pillar of fire at night time in their wilderness journey. The Holy Spirit also guides us in the right way and lights our path.

Exodus 13:21 - “And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:”

Psalm 78:14 - “In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.”

3. Oil: 1 Samuel 16:1,13 - “And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons...Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him (David) in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward...”

4. Water: John 7:38-39 - “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive...”

5. Wind: John 3:8 - “The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.”

Acts 2:2,4 - “And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind...And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
